Gays and lesbians traveling to San Diego will find the area peaceful and even keel. Gay and lesbian travelers may feel most comfortable in Hillcrest and the Uptown District, which is often compared to a much tamer version of San Francisco's Castro district. Many gay folks can be found around the eastern part of Hillcrest.
The areas north of Hillcrest are also growing in popularity among gays and lesbians, including University Heights and North Park.
If you're planning to visit San Diego's beaches, you might find a gay crowd along Pacific Beach.
One thing is for sure. San Diego, although not quite as out and obnoxious its California neighbors, does have a decent gay scene. In Hillcrest alone, there are a number of nightclubs and bars specifically for gays and lesbians, including Bourbon Street, Brass Rail, The Flame and Kickers.
